Overview

The Department of Pathogenic Biology was officially established in January 2019, by incorporating the Department of Microbiology, the Department of Parasitology and the Laboratory of Infection and Immunity. Professor Jianping CHEN is the current director of this department. The goals of constructing such a new department are to establish the first-class center of infection and immunity in China, the research center of new and recurrent infectious diseases, and the research and development center of vaccines andin vitrodiagnostic reagents. This new department has totally 16 faculty members, including 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 7 lecturers. Among them, 2 are doctoral supervisors and 5 are postgraduate supervisors.

Teaching

The Department of Pathogenic Biology undertakes several courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and foreign students, such asHuman Parasitology,MicrobiologyandExperiment of Pathogenic Biology, etc. Our faculty members have been leading the editing of the national level text books for years. These textbooks were published by the People’s Medical Publishing House, Sichuan University Press, Higher Education Press, and Science Press, such as the 8-year programtextbookMedical Microbiology, etc. We have made outstanding contributions to the education of medical talents in China.

Research

The Department of Pathogenic Biology have made remarkable achievements in basic medical research. Professor Zhengyi WANG won the National Science Conference Award by studying hookworm blood sucking in 1978. Professor Baoming DAI won the Third Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress in 1996 for his research on the mechanism of pulmonary hemorrhage caused by leptospira. Professor Xiaosu HU won the Third Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress in 1998 for the study of monoclonal antibody and PCR diagnosis of kala-azar. Professor Lang BAO won the First Prize of Technology Invention of the ministry of education in 2005.

Our research is mainly focusing on the following 3 directions. (1) Monitoring the emerging and recurring infectious diseases in real time, to provide accurate warning and scientific reference. (2) Rapid development of pathogen diagnosis, new drug and vaccine research after the outbreak of infectious disease. (3) Basic research on pathogenicity and immune mechanism of anti-infection. We have successively undertaken the National 863 Program project, National 973 Major Program, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and also undertaken projects from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
